Welcome to our class!

Welcome back students! I am so excited to have you in my class this year. It is going to be a fun one.

Math

I just wanted to give you a little more information about the math program we are using this year. The basis for the program is to help children have a better understanding of how numbers work together and to improve their problem solving skills. Every day we do word problems in our Math Journals. Each student has a box of base 10 blocks for them to use in solving each problem.

The work you will see coming home is our practice on basic skills which are needed to be able to problem solve effectively.

Literacy

This week and next, we will be working on character studies and developing stories with a beginning, middle and end.

Next week the student's will be bringing home a reading bag. We have been working in groups each day but we will begin working on specific reading strategies in each group.

Please read with your child each night. If a book does not come home with them, they can choose to read anything they have at home.

The best thing you can do with your child while reading is to ask them questions about what they are reading. (What is your favorite character? Why is it your favorite character? Can you tell me the beginning, middle and end? What is your favorite part and why? Can you describe the character? etc)



Writing

This week during our writing workshop, we will beging to learn how to create a story with a beginning, middle, and end. We have been talking about character traits and hope this will help the students to better develop their characters in their stories.

So far we have learned to write a summary, tell of our favorite parts of the story and character studies.

We will continue working on sentence structure and writing details preparation for writing paragraphs.

Science

Look what we are learning in Science.... This past week we started learning about scientific investigations and the tools scientists use to observe, predict, form a hyphothesis, test theories and make conclusions about things in our world.

The Magic Schoolbus series is helping us learn about mold, dust mites and things we cannot see with the human eye. We are using appropriate tools to view these things and learning about safety in studying science.

Weather

Weather
We will begin to learn about weather and temperature this week. I will be introducing the class to our weather journal and how to predict and chart our weather daily.
